Made in The Shade: Cherry Hill Tree Planting

April 27th was the annual observance of Arbor Day. That's when the role of trees in our lives is celebrated. It makes sense, because the tree has appeared throughout history and literature as the symbol of life.

So in honor of Arbor Day, the Cherry Hill Homes community is getting an upgrade! All of this thanks to a community gesture from HABC, The Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Port Administration (MDOT MPA) and Blue Water Baltimore (BWB)!

This community planting includes a garden variety of nearly two dozen tree species. This effort will not only beautify Cherry Hill Homes, but it will also provide shade for residents and their families on those particularly sunny and hot days native to Charm City.

The first tree planting day, to coincide with Arbor Day 2018, took place on Friday, April 27th. Planters from the community, as well as students and faculty from Cherry Hill Elementary School and volunteers from BGE joined HABC, The Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Port Administration and Blue Water Baltimore. They met from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday April 28th to complete the planting of 100 trees between homes and open spaces. The variety of trees include: southern oak, sycamores, fruit trees, American plum, red buds and paw paw trees.

Blue Water's Environmental Construction team dug the holes for these trees and will maintain them for the first three years. Many of the trees planted in Cherry Hill will be 30 feet tall in 10 years! Through the partnership with MDOT MPA, BWB plans to install an additional 500 trees in the Baltimore metro area later this year.

Happy Arbor Day Cherry Hill.
