Head Start More About Us
Head Start Serves Children and Families in Your Community. Baltimore City Head Start provides a variety of services to the entire family. Several of Head Start's free, comprehensive child and family development services include the following:
- Health Services: This includes coordination of physical exams, developmental screenings, immunizations, dental care, and mental health services.
- Nutrition Services: Nutritionists work with the programs and families to develop menus and to refer children for food allergy testing. Children receive two meals at Head Start each day.
- Education Services: Preschool classes address the individual developmental needs of each child. Head Start places a strong emphasis on literacy, social-emotional growth, and learning and development through play. Programs are provided for infants and toddlers in Early Head Start, and for preschoolers from ages 3 to 5 in traditional Head Start. Some classes have extended services and are available up to 10 hours a day. Head Start provides qualified staff with a supervised and structured approach to ongoing professional development to support solid instruction and guidance in the classrooms.
- Disability Services: Children with disabilities are included in all aspects of the Head Start Program. Infants and toddlers are served by Early Head Start in partnership with the Baltimore City Department of Health. Pre-K children are served by Head Start in partnership with the Baltimore City Public School System.
- Family Partnerships: To help each family identify and work towards life goals, available services include adult education, job training, college tuition assistance, family literacy, and parent education and assistance in finding other requested services.
