Head Start Volunteers-Making a Difference.
Head Start was founded on the belief that meaningful citizen participation is essential to a program's success. From the beginning, Head Start has promoted the use of volunteers and community resources for the benefit of Head Start children and families. See examples of volunteer positions.
Beyond their roles as important members of their local communities, Head Start volunteers also help the program to meet a government-regulated goal. By law, at least 20 percent of the total cost of Head Start Programs must come from non-federal sources. Fortunately, the services of volunteers and donated community resources can be counted as in-kind contributions toward the non-federal share of the local Head Start budget. Parent and community involvement is the essence of the Head Start concept, and it is at the core of the required 20-percent contribution.
In accordance with Head Start Volunteer Policies, "Every Head Start Program must use volunteers to the fullest extent possible." So, why should you become a Baltimore City Head Start Volunteer?
1) Volunteers are positive role models and mentors for parents who wish to improve their lives.
2) Parent volunteers receive work experience, training, and support, enabling them to become self-sufficient.
3) Head Start parent volunteers in leadership become partners in operating the program.
4) Head Start parent volunteers' pride and ownership in the program extends to the larger community.
5) Community and professional volunteers feel ownership and responsibility for a program that well utilizes their special skills.
6) Volunteers provide increased services to children and families in each service area throughout the program.
