Maryland receives $2.3 million to educate, train public housing residents

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has granted Maryland $2.3 million to help people living in public housing find opportunities for job training and education.
The money will be used to hire local “service coordinators” who will work with people living in public housing, or receiving financial assistance from the government to pay for housing, find services that will lead to employment, according to a statement Friday from the department.
In addition to connecting public housing residents with job training and educational opportunities, the coordinators will be able to guide public assistance recipients to childcare, transportation, and counseling, and computer and budgeting lessons, HUD said.
The money comes from two federal self-sufficiency programs. People who receive help from either program are expected to stop taking housing assistance within five years of enrolling, according to the statement.
Baltimore is receiving a large chunk of the money, just over $400,000. Baltimore County has been allocated $175,000. Carroll and Harford are getting about $55,000 each.
Annapolis' Housing Authority is expected to receive $140,000 and Anne Arundel County's Housing Commission will receive about $260,000. Howard County will get roughly $60,000.
The rest of the funds are to be divvied up among other local agencies and statewide offices.
